Taxpayers Association of Europe confers the Taxpayers Award 2007

to EU Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel For the ninth time, on 14 May 2007 the European Taxpayers Award of the Taxpayers Association of Europe will be awarded in Brussels. It will be given to Ms Mariann Fischer Boel, the competent EU Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development.

The European Taxpayers Award, a bronze sculpture in form of the European Bull, symbolizes the never ending struggle for survival, strength and self-assertion. At the same time it represents the symbol of Europe, and in this particular case, it is a symbol of the European agricultural policy and the problems related therewith, says the European President, Mr Rolf von Hohenhau. In his opinion, Europe must be open to the targets of the European Taxpayers Association’s vision and made fit for the future. We require a Europe of regions and diversity, a Europe of citizens and taxpayers and not a Europe of bureaucracy, too high tax burdens or individualistic national interests.

The symbolism and intention of this award is especially true for this prize winner, says President von Hohenhau.
According to President von Hohenhau, the targets of the Taxpayers Association of Europe, founded 1969 in Luxembourg, are to achieve relief of high charges, undue bureaucracy as well as avoidance of additional, new taxes. Further, the European Taxpayers Association fights for more simplification and justice in tax laws, against waste of public funds, and for more efficient use of these funds.

In his eulogy, Dr Luis Durnwlader, President of the Autonomous Province Bolzano/Bozen und Deputy-President of the Autonomous Region Trentino-South Tyrol, highly commended the prize winner’s merits.

With EU commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel we commend an outstanding personality committed to protect – against all political resistances – a sustainable, future-capable agriculture in Europe, without losing sight of animal protection and welfare. It is thanks to the engagement of the agricultural commissioner Fischer Boel that the European export remuneration for meat-type cattle in third countries was abolished in December 2005. She has expressly proven with this action that animal welfare is more than a simple word for the European Commission.
