Taxpayers Association of Europe criticizes
EU Plans for a Globalization Fund

The Taxpayers Association of Europe has expressed its opposition to plans now substantiated by the EU Commission. The Commission seeks to establish a fund designed to facilitate adaptation to globalization. It would like to use the fund to provide individual support to workers particularly affected by globalization. „Polishing up the EU’s image at a cost of 500 million euros per year is nothing but a waste of taxpayers’ money. The EU should commit itself to putting Europe’s citizens and businesses in a position to better capitalize on the opportunities offered by globalization,” said The Taxpayers Association’s President von Hohenhau. He also called on the Council and the EU Parliament to stop the Commission’s plans.

In addition, von Hohenhau reminded the Commission to comply consistently with the subsidiarity principle. He said individual nations and regions were in a much better position than the EU to support workers who had lost their jobs on account of intensified global competition. Von Hohenhau added that it was not the EU’s responsibility to pursue an active employment policy.

Finally, the Taxpayers Federation of Europe cautioned the EU Commission against constantly creating new ancillary budgets. It said expenditure items needed to be included in the official financial framework to remain controllable.
